I am kicking off my new website today, and I thought I should start my new blog with the story of how I got into photography. The story is a bit unusual, in that I started in the darkroom and not with a camera.
One day when I was in Grade 7, I was standing in the school hallway chatting with a classmate. Our homeroom teacher walked by with a camera and some film, and asked us if we wanted to see how photographs were made. We certainly did, so we went to the darkroom with him (something I am sure would be frowned upon today) and he showed us how film was developed, and then how prints were made.
I was smitten with this magical process, and I wanted to try it for myself. I got my mother's camera and I took some pictures. My teacher let me develop the film and make some prints by myself. While I was still in love with the process, taking pictures and then processing them myself made me realize that this was a way for me to share with others the images that I saw in my head. I have not stopped taking pictures since!
